What is Memecoin?
Also known as: meme coin, meme token
A cryptocurrency inspired by an internet meme, joke, or cultural moment, where community and virality drive value more than utility.
A memecoin is a cryptocurrency whose value is driven primarily by community, social momentum, and cultural relevance rather than a technical product or cash-flow. Dogecoin (2013) is the original; the category exploded on Solana and Base in 2024–2026 as launchpads like Pump.fun made deploying a token take seconds and cost a few dollars.
Unlike utility tokens, a memecoin rarely promises a roadmap of features. Its "fundamentals" are attention metrics: holder count, social engagement, meme spread, and liquidity depth. This makes branding, narrative, and community speed the real moat — which is why launch teams invest in logos, websites, and aged social handles before deploying.
Memecoins are high-risk and highly speculative. Most go to zero. The ones that survive convert a fleeting joke into a durable community with its own lore, rituals, and reasons to hold.
